Duke Nukem Forever: barely playable, not funny, rampantly offensive (2

Fundamentally broken
Duke's original weapons remain, and they're fun to use, but the new sniper rifle and alien energy weapon are rather boring. There was no way to expand on the innovative ideas from the first game, even a little? Yes, you can find and use turrets now, but everything feels dumbed down; objects that you need to interact with simply glow.

When you hold down the left trigger, you don't bring up iron sights; the entire screen just zooms in a bit. There's no animation of lifting the gun, although at least with one weapon, you do get a scope. It all feels like something out of a game from 15 years ago.

Feces

Even worse is the fact that the game uses regenerating health called "Ego," which encourages you to take a few shots at the enemy, run for cover until your health returns, and then attack again. The full-on, guns blazing attitude of the first game (and even more recent titles such as Serious Sam) is completely absent. Duke Nukem Forever turns into a straight stop-and-pop experience, which is not what Duke should ever be. Not only that, but there is no cover system in place, so you find yourself scuttling for the nearest corner or pillar to hide behind.

Duke, the biggest, baddest-ass warrior that Earth has to offer, also turns out to have his limits: he can carry only two weapons at a time, Halo-style. No matter what you're shooting, you'll wish for something else; the game gives you little feedback about whether you've actually hit your target. The boring, glitchy shooting is utterly forgettable.
No reason to play this

Multiple developers have worked on this game for over a decade, so I don't know who to blame for the unplayable, glitchy, ugly, offensive mess it has become. No humor can make up for the game's rampant hatred of women, and the terrible writing and one-liners can't even be compensated for by good gameplay. The game's jokes about other titles are laughable when you see how putrid Duke is upon release.

Scribble in this kid's book for a health boost!

Sure, it may still sell millions of copies due to the name alone, but it will disappoint buyers and make anyone with half a brain feel uncomfortable. I have no clue how a game so all-encompassingly ugly can suffer from so many framerate issues, but Duke finds a way. From a business and gaming history perspective, the fact that the title exists at all is fascinating; for everyone else asked to spend $60 on it, it's merely sad.

I'm a fan of humor that's willing to push the boundaries, but nothing is being sent up, mocked, or lampooned here. There's just no reason for what you see and hear. This is an ugly game that exists to celebrate ugliness. The people involved should be ashamed.

The Good

  • The game doesn't last very long

The Bad

  • Everything else

The Ugly

  • I have to install and play this piece of garbage on the PC to see how that version holds up, and make sure there's nothing to be salvaged from the multiplayer

Verdict: Skip

Duke Nukem Forever: barely playable, not funny, rampantly offensive (1

In the first few moments of Duke Nukem Forever, your character pees in a urinal and then earns an achievement for reaching into a toilet and extracting a piece of human excrement. Why does the game reward you for doing this? I have no idea. It's not part of a joke or important to the story; the designers of the game apparently feel that you would miss out by not holding some poo in your virtual hand.

There's a feeling among some fans of Duke Nukem that anyone who dares to give a bad review to a Duke title simply doesn't understand what the game is trying to do. We need to relax, goes the argument, relax enough to laugh at the rampant misogyny and hateful stereotypes on display throughout the game. If a review suggests that it's not funny simply to hear someone use dirty words, that's the reviewer's failing, not an issue with the game. Any hint that constant jokes about penis size aren't the height of comedy? The reviewer must not have a sense of humor.

The fans are wrong. One can laugh at jokes about men and women, and there's nothing wrong with being risque, but Duke is thoughtless, backwards, and belligerent. Duke Nukem Forever is the kind of game where you find a pack of cigarettes whose cover shows a mustached man wearing leather—and they're called "Faggs." At some point, matters of personal taste become simple questions of basic decency.
An uncomfortable Thanksgiving dinner

The opening of Duke Nukem 3D was iconic. Within seconds of launching the game, you found yourself in exciting combat within an impressively interactive world. You could show a film on the screen inside a movie theater and find hidden rooms and weapons. The game rewarded you for exploring, and the shooting itself was satisfying. The whole experience had little padding to it, and the "mature" elements of the game added flavor to what was already a wonderful game. If impressive level design was the cake, paying strippers was the icing.

But in the Duke Nukem Forever universe, the situation is reversed. The game seems only to exist in order to do things like show a pair of twins performing fellatio on the main character.

And while Duke Nukem 3D threw us into the action within seconds, the new game spends an interminable amount of time asking us to run through the bland environment, learning how to use "Duke Vision" to see in the dark and do everything but fire a gun at a bad guy. What happened to the action-packed game with the ribald humor? This is a title that thinks you're going to be so impressed by seeing the hint of a breast, you'll forget that nothing else is happening.

The first 30 minutes of the game consist of moments where people idolize you—oh, and you can turn the lights on and off. You walk through a museum where relics from the first game are stored, which gives you a hint at how this title was put together. While Gearbox obviously remembered all the neat little details that made Dukesuch a classic, they didn't remember to put those details in a good game. The game is hollow.

And that's before you come to the really offensive bits. Just in case you didn't feel like the game had adequately rubbed your nose in its horrific depiction of women, Duke arrives at a point where two nude ladies promise to lose their pregnancy weight from bearing their alien children, and they plead with you to let them live. (These are the same characters who performed fellatio on you during the beginning sequences of the game.)

The only way past this section of the game is to kill both women.

Update: I apologize for the confusion—as was pointed out in the comments, if you wait long enough, they'll explode due to the aliens growing inside them. You may now mock me for getting out my gun to try to escape the game just a little bit quicker.

In another scene, a woman sobs and asks for her father. You see, the women in the alien craft are being forcibly impregnated by the aliens, and during your journey, you hear a mixture of screams and sexual noises. After I accidentally blew up a few of these female victims in a firefight, Duke made a joke about abortion.

This is what passes for humor in the game. It's not racy, it's not funny, and it makes you feel dirty. Every time I put the controller down, I felt the need to rub my hands on my jeans as if the game were making me physically dirty. It's like watching your uncle tell racist jokes at Thanksgiving and praying someone has the guts to tell him to cut it out, but this time it's interactive—and you're the uncle.
An impossible job?

"This is an execution of 3D Realms' design," said Steve Gibson, the VP of Marketing for Gearbox, when I first played the game. "We didn't redesign the game at all. We took their concept, their design, and their ideas, and we finished them. We polished them and executed on them."

(I still remember the moment when Gibson told me that he didn't like the term "toilet humor"; he referred to the jokes in Duke Nukem as "base humor." But when you deal with both urine and feces within seconds of the game's opening, no other term will do.)

Gearbox had an impossible job, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford may have been blinded by his love for the character and the classic game. His adoration of Duke has been plain, as has the team's devotion to the original vision for the game, even though the game features ideas and mechanics that feel a decade out of date. Duke Nukem Forever makes more sense if you think of it as something found in a time capsule, not as a new release that is being sold for $60 and is expected to compete with newer, better games.

As for the levels, remember when you could walk around in Duke Nukem 3D, exploring the environments, finding items, and locating the path needed to get ahead? That's over and done with. Duke Nukem Forever is one long corridor. You shoot your way through it, then there's a joke about a penis, then you shoot through another corridor—and then maybe you backtrack!—and then someone says something with curse words in it because that's edgy. With no exploration, no sense of joy at discovering something, there's no real way to forge your own path in the game. It's all point A to point B.

The joke in the image below may have been about Doom and shooters in 2010, but it still fits when talking about Duke Nukem Forever.

Credit to Kotaku, various other sources

It's also not fun to die, only to be faced with a too-long loading time to get back into the action. In fact, the loading times in general are horrendous. When you miss a save point, have to wait a minute or so, then have to play through the same un-fun firefight... you'll want to quit—regardless of how many construction workers are in the next scene discussing how it's okay to "just look" at their aunt's breasts.

During one scene, after you blow up one of the alien pigs, Duke says, "Pork chop sandwiches." Now, I'm a fan of the Internet, so I know what he's referencing, but that's all this is: a reference. There's no joke here. It's like trying to sit through one of those awful parodies like Disaster Movie, where instead of telling a joke, the characters simply re-enact a scene from another movie.

The constant pop culture references in the game don't serve any purpose, and they never made me laugh. The only feeling they stirred in me was that my DVD collection may be too large.

Duke Nukem Forever even features "topical" humor that includes the ability to punch a Christian Bale-like character who is ranting about someone walking through his set. These jokes were stale years ago.

Jade Dynasty celebrating its two-year anniversary

At this year's E3, four Massively staffers were on site for interviews, demos, and hands-on time with the latest MMOs. You've read about most of what we've seen so far, but now we're ready to tell you about our experiences with what may be the most highly anticipated MMO of the show: Star Wars: The Old Republic.

A few of us have played the game before, or multiple times, while this was the first time for others. Our opinions are varied, but you'll notice a fairly obvious theme. Follow along after the jump for more on what we thought of our time with SWTOR at E3 2011.

Dan O'Halloran

I was able to play two different level 26 Sith Empire characters at E3. First, I got my hands on the Imperial Agent class with the Operative advanced class. This class relies on stealth for its opening move, then on a number of DoTs combined with shiv and laser pistol attacks. I found the class to be not very exciting. Once out of stealth, I had no way to restealth. Also, there was only one ability to use while stealthed. Admittedly, those abilities I was missing may come later in the character's progression, and I may have had a better experience in a group in which positioning would have helped, but overall I was unimpressed.

Next, I played a Sith Inquisitor Sorceress. I had much more fun with this class. I would send my companion in to draw fire, disable one mob with Whirlwind, and lay down the lightning on the other. I could heal mid-battle, attack multiple mobs at once, and shield myself if I knew I was going to take damage. She soloed well, and I could see she would do quite well in a group situation as well.

I was able to play through a mid-level quest, which was standard fare: kill 20 of these, loot one of those, etc. The interesting part was getting a bonus for killing more than 20 targets. I wasn't sure what the bonus was, but my quest tracker was recording it. Also, the quest was clearly the start of a chain that was steeped in the story and lore of Tatooine. Those kind of elements help get you through the leveling grind on your way to the endgame content.

Overall, I found SWTOR to be enjoyable, though nothing particularly revolutionary for the MMO genre.

When I first heard about the standard class-based gameplay, I was a little worried. After all, Star Wars Galaxies had given me so much over the years in the way of travel options, housing, customization, and character development (yes, even after the NGE) that I worried about the "new guy" offering anything less. Granted, I only had a short amount of time for it, but it felt very MMO-"ish" to me. Grab a quest, get on your mount, find the enemies, and start killing them.

The main attraction of the game seems to be the ability to craft your personal story by choosing either dark or light actions and interacting with NPCs with the famous dialogue wheel. Also, having your companions react to what you do in a positive or negative way was nice. Essentially, I was not impressed with the standard combat and movement, but it felt like playing through a chapter in a deeper story. The voice acting was short enough to stand on its own and remain interesting. I can only imagine playing through an entire campaign -- that would feel pretty epic.

I finally got my hands on SWTOR the last day of E3, so I was going in with some serious anticipation and excitement. I'd never played the game before, so my only impressions have come from Massively coverage, trailers, and gameplay videos. I had pretty high expectations, even though it's not my favored genre.

Since it was my first hands-on, I chose a starter character, and I felt obligated to make a Jedi Knight. My impressions were of an extremely polished game... and a super-uncomfortable stool to sit on, but that's neither here nor there.

When I picked up and set out on my first quest, I found a nice balance between a game that held my hand and led me along and a game that allowed me to explore and find things on my own.

I enjoyed the different choices in my conversations with NPCs, followed by the brief cinematics. The setup felt very novel and open to me, and I enjoyed thinking over my options before answering. Once I was out in the open, running around and killing, it felt like a fairly typical MMO, albeit a nicely created one. Kill 10 of these, rescue five of these, find this cave, and so on. I don't generally have a problem with this MMO staple in the beginning areas because it is a nice tool for helping brand-new players learn combat and get a feel for the world around them. I'm interested to find out whether that sort of thing continues into the higher levels. I hope not.

The look of the game wasn't particularly to my taste, but personal preferences aside, I can appreciate that it's consistent. I've seen enough games with stunning characters and butt-ugly worlds -- or vice versa -- that I've got big love for games that keep a consistent art style throughout.

All of that said, this game is just not for me.

There's nothing wrong with it. On the contrary, I was extremely impressed with how well-done it is. But it didn't hit the right notes for me. It didn't hit any notes. When the demo was over, I climbed out of my chair and walked out with nary a frown that I'd been made to stop playing.

Thankfully, I'm married to a SWTOR fanatic who cannot wait for this game to come out, and I can appreciate it on his behalf. He's gonna love it.

When I played Star Wars: The Old Republic for the first time in 2010, I admittedly was a bit overwhelmed. Granted, the highly anticipated MMO was still in a very early stage of development, but most of what I saw was fun and easy to grasp. When you put so much hype into an MMO -- especially during a time of so many recent failures in the genre -- you really do expect a certain amount of excitement. At the time, I felt that the game delivered, but it still didn't blow me away entirely.

Fast forward two years later and I'm playing the game again as a level 26 Sith Warrior Marauder at a demo room at E3 with probably 15-20 other people. I'm usually not one for melee characters, but I was thoroughly excited to get my hands on the game once again.

I was pleased by the freedom we were given in this demo, as opposed to my first experience. We were allowed to figure the game out ourselves, with only some gentle suggestive nudging by the BioWare devs in the room if we appeared lost. I found the UI to be very easy to decipher, the controls to be traditional and familiar, and the general layout of the game to be something you'd expect in any MMO. My quests involved finding an injured NPC and killing a handful of Sand People along the way. When I killed more than my allotted 20, the quest progressed to a bonus version, allowing me to get more rewards for killing 40 more.

The experience was a bit more on-rails than I'd like, though, as I could look across the mountainous wall around me and see caves marked with either a red or green entranceway, depending on whether I was able to enter them or not. This made the main quest a cakewalk to find, but I hope that's something you can turn off if you don't care to have your hand held the entire game.

The group dynamics were pretty incredible as we tested out the group dialogue options. Any BioWare fan is familiar with the dialogue wheel and how that works, but it gets especially fun when your conversation with an NPC is dictated by various choices picked by your teammates. Each person in the group picks his or her dialogue choices, and the games rolls to see whose snarky or not-so-snarky comment is used. This can be especially fun when you're playing on demo characters with no real consequences. Yes, I want to shoot that guy in the face! Yes, I want to burn that ancient relic to the ground!

Despite my enjoyment of the story and conversations with NPCs, I felt that the one sticking point was the combat. I'm sure not all classes are like this, but with the Marauder, I was literally pressing the 1 and 2 keys until I built up enough aggression to use any other skill. So it would be 1-2-1-2-1-2... 3. 1-2-1-2-1-2... 4. And so on.

That's not to say that this is a flawed mechanic -- it works well for World of Warcraft, RIFT, Lord of the Rings Online, and so many other triple-A MMOs, but it's just nothing new. I admit I did have fun with the end combo skills once they opened up, though.

Overall, I feel that SWTOR will be a hugely popular game at launch. I enjoyed it much more this time than any other time I've played it, which means only good things if this pattern keeps up. In the progression of MMOs of this type, we've seen RIFT take players from WoW, and in that same manner, I think we'll see many RIFT players follow the path to SWTOR. It will be familiar enough to jump right in yet new and fresh enough to keep them coming back every month for more. SWTOR will attract fans of BioWare's unmatched storylines, Star Wars franchise fans, and traditional MMO followers. It will not, however, revolutionize the genre.

Video games being blamed for divorce as men 'prefer World of Warcraft to their wives'

The explosion of video games and their popularity bring along several pressing social problems. Increasingly, there is one more reason to be wary of video game addiction: wrecked marriages. A study conducted by Divorce Online reveals that of the women are filing for divorce on the grounds of “unreasonable behavior”, about 15percent believe that their partners place gaming before them. This represents an increase of 5 percent in the short span of a year.

Divorce Online marketing manager Mark Keenan decided to look into the issue when he and his team of researchers noticed the recurrence of World of Warcraft (WoW) mentioned in divorce cases. The study looked at 200 unreasonable behavior petitions filed by women.

Specifically, these wives appeared to single out WoW, an MMORPG where gamers control a mythical creature in a fantasy world, as well as Call Of Duty, a shooter game series where gamers battle in warzones. From their inception, MMOs have received heavy criticism for their addictive qualities, some even claiming MMOs to be more addictive than cocaine.

Ryan G Van Cleave, an expert on video game addition, states that many gamers are unaware that gaming can become an addiction; even if they do, they believe that they are in full control. He suggests that the problem comes in when “the non-gamer doesn’t appreciate that it’s an addiction. This means that it’s not a choice to spend so much time in a virtual environment versus time spent with spouse and family. It’s a compulsion.”

The devastating effects of video game addiction have been highlighted in popular US television series Dr Phil, with divorce and the breakdown of marriages as a common consequence. Nonetheless, Van Cleave believes that like in the case of any other addiction, gaming addicts can overcome the problem with understanding and professional help. Citing the results of his study, however, Keegan believes that divorce rates pertaining to video game addiction could continue climbing in the following years.

“The increase could be a consequence of people staying indoors more because of the recession, or it might be being used by men in particular as a means of escape from an already unhappy relationship.”

A summary of Dr Phil’s series on video game addiction can be found here.

Chinese Prisoners Forced into MMO Gold Farming

In movies, (Chow Yun Fatt’s popular Prison on Fire comes to mind) the idea of prison inmate abuse through physical punishments and hard labor has been explored to death. In real life however, there could be worse torture than just physical labor. A recent UK feature on Chinese Prisoner Liu Dali’s (not his real name) prison story revealed how Chinese prisoners were forced into MMO gold farming at night, after a long laborious day of physical work.

"If I couldn't complete my work quota, they would punish me physically," explained Liu Dali, suggesting how the MMO gold farming was neither an enjoyable past time nor a voluntary recreation of the inmates. He further described the punishments, claiming that those who “fell behind” in terms of hitting the quota of gold would be “made to stand with their hands raised in the air”. Worse punishments may even come in the form of “getting beat with plastic pipes”

Two years ago, the Chinese government has already placed appropriate restrictions on MMO Gold farming, clearly stating that virtual currencies may only be used for trading virtual goods. Despite the imposed laws, Liu has said that the profitability of MMO gold farming was simply too good for prison bosses to ignore. According to what he heard in prison, bosses could earn 5,000 to 6,000 RMB a day.

MMO gold farming is not a new thing in China though. It is quite common knowledge by now that sweatshops exist solely for farming gold. In such shops, workers are hired for cheap to sit out 12hr sessions only farming gold. Although big names such as World of Warcraft and even the Chinese government have tried to ban gold farming, it remains on the large as a lucrative form of making money. There has already been a gold farming site that has been sold for USD $10 millionearlier this year.

Coupled with Liu Dali’s story, this may potentially send some shockwaves down both the MMO and real world.

Xbox 360 vs PS3 - are they both winning? Or losing? Or neither?

Statistics are all about interpretation - they don't always lie, as the famous quote suggests, but they can easily be manipulated into saying things they're not sure they want to say.

Here, for example, are two very recent stories on the Xbox vs PlayStation face-off, both using similar sources... to make quite different points.

From the Artstechnica feature:

It wouldn't be accurate to say that the sky is falling for Microsoft's one and only gaming console, the 360, but it may be time to look at what the company is doing right... and where it's going wrong. The Sony PlayStation 3 is beginning to chip away at the 360's lead in both software and hardware sales in the US, and that system only seems to be picking up steam. In contrast, the 360 doesn't seem to have much real momentum these days.

From the TG Daily equivalent:

Tokyo (Japan) - Once again, it is an exclusive game title that is the decisive factor in console sales. In this case, it is worth a special note, as the Xbox 360 sold almost three times more units as the PS3 over the course of one week. Nationally and internationally, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 seem to be involved in a dead heat with sales advantages shifting almost every month.

Can't we just agree that there may be no winner this time round - or indeed, ever again? The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 are all strong enough, and have large enough installed user-bases to keep going. They are all backed by huge multinational companies, they all have their own supporters in the development and publishing sectors. No-one is about to drop out or fade away. Somewhere, there are statistics to prove it.

Online Game DEFINITION

Online gaming is a technology rather than a genre; a mechanism for connecting players together rather than a particular pattern of gameplay. Online games are played over some form of computer network, now typically on the Internet. One advantage of online games is the ability to connect to multiplayer games, although single-player online games are quite common as well.

An online game is a game played over some form of computer network. This almost always means the Internet or equivalent technology, but games have always used whatever technology was current: modems before the Internet, and hard wired terminals before modems. The expansion of online gaming has reflected the overall expansion of computer networks from small local networks to the Internet and the growth of Internet access itself. Online games can range from simple text based games to games incorporating complex graphics and virtual worlds populated by many players simultaneously. Many online games have associated online communities, making online games a form of social activity beyond single player games.

The rising popularity of Flash and Java led to an Internet revolution where websites could utilize streaming video, audio, and a whole new set of user interactivity. When Microsoft began packaging Flash as a pre-installed component of IE, the Internet began to shift from a data/information spectrum to also offer on-demand entertainment. This revolution paved the way for sites to offer games to web surfers. Some online multiplayer games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI andLineage II charge a monthly fee to subscribe to their services, while games such asGuild Wars offer an alternative no monthly fee scheme. Many other sites relied on advertising revenues from on-site sponsors, while others, like RuneScape, or Tibialet people play for free while leaving the players the option of paying, unlocking new content for the members.

After the dot-com bubble burst in 2001, many sites solely relying on advertising revenue dollars faced extreme adversity. Despite the decreasing profitability of online gaming websites, some sites have survived the fluctuating ad market by offsetting the advertising revenue loss by using the content as a cross-promotion tool for driving web visitors to other websites that the company owns.

The term online gaming in many circles is being strictly defined to describe games that do not involve wagering, although many still use the term online gamingsynonymously with online gambling. This article focuses on online games that do not involve wagering, online gambling is discussed in a separate article.

E3 2011: Conquering the world with World of Tanks

The free-to-play MMO is making great strides across the world. And if you were to ask the CEO ofWarGaming.net, Viktor Kislyi, he'd tell you his F2P game World of Tanks is bigger in some countries thanWorld of Warcraft, particularly his home nation of Russia. As he told us when we talked to him at E3, "[It] beat the crap out of WoW in Russia." He backed that statement up by saying there are over 155,000 concurrent players in Russia daily for his MMO.

With the introduction of Clan Wars earlier this year, World of Tanks appears to be quite literally conquering the world. Kislyi boasts that the Russian server has over 6,000 active clans, and over three million players are actively playing world-wide, which he claims is better than the stats of most of our favorite MMOs. He says if you combine the peak hours of all the servers across the globe, World of Tankshosts 300,000 concurrent players. That's a staggering number. Pop past the break as we dig deeper into the discussion with Kislyi and find out why this game is storming the world.

"This is my dream coming true, and it happened to be a good business, bringing in a good income," Kislyi said with a smile. How can it not be a dream come true? He has a wildly successful MMO that is loved in nearly every country with internet. He tells us that he has received great reviews in America, Europe, China, and of course, Russia.

He attributes part of this success to the low barrier of entry: It's a free-to-play game without a cash shop. That's not to say there are no microtransactions -- there are. "There's no list you can browse through," Kislyi explains. "You browse through only with the intent on how to spend your money. We did it cleverly and transparently. We spread the money-spending part of the game so you can see what you're buying when you actually need it." If you come to a point in the game that you need a new part for a tank or a power-up, that is when you will prompted to spend real-life money.

"What we don't have is a shop, because who likes to shop? Women do. This is a boy's game," Kislyi says.

He backs up the claim that this is a "boy's game" by citing Female-Gamers, a Dutch website that focuses on reviews of games from the feminine perspective. Kislyi jokes, "What's funny: two weeks ago, we got a review that gave us [an overall rating of] 5 out of 10 and fun [rating of] 2 out of 10! We're like, 'WHAT!?' This happened to be the Netherlands association of female gamers. RIGHT ON! TO THE FRONT PAGE! TO THE FORUMS! NOW! That was the best advertising ever!"

We asked whether he was proud of that low score, and he quickly replied, "Absolutely!"

The future of World of Tanks is all about expanding the conquerable world and getting better tanks to conquer with. North America is the next landmass to be added to the game. Kislyi mentioned that he was just excitedly looking over the artwork for the American territories. Along with the American nations, the devs are adding American destroyer tanks; French tanks will launch in September; and British tanks will land near the end of the year. Eventually, in 2012, he would like to add Japanese tanks, but he doesn't have an exact time for that yet.

As for other additions to the game: We can look forward to cross-server battles, new maps, and a one-off game called a Garage Battle. This is a 15v15 map where each player pulls five tanks from his garage and places them on deck. If the first tank is destroyed, the player can re-enter the battle with one of the tanks from his pool.

Kislyi is clearly excited about where his game is and where it is going, but he says the real pride is in the players. "The possession of a territory gives you gold," the proud designer tells us, "but that's not what they are playing for. They are playing for fame. We can see their strategy. They want to hold Moscow, hold Berlin. They want to hold Israel and London. In the forums and in the face-to-face meetings, we can tell that these people are very proud about controlling these parts of the world."
"What's to stop these clans from completely controlling a server?" we ask. "Nothing," he replies, "They deserve it." Clearly, Viktor Kislyi has some very different ideas about what makes a game great, but who can argue with success. It appears to be working so far.

Don't Panic! Hothead Games Bringing Back Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Here's a bit of news guaranteed to get Douglas Adams-loving Earthlings into a tizzy. This morning, developer Hothead Games and "publisher" Megadodo Publications announced that a new Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy project is on the way.

Happy Towel Day, everyone! The press release and newly launchedwebsite both fail to mention any details beyond the fact that a Hitchhiker's Guidesomething is in the works, but with Hothead on board, it seems safe to assume it's a game of some fashion. Possibly a funny one.

The last time the Hitchhiker's Guide graced the gaming world was in Infocom's fantastictext-based computer game, which Adams himself had a hand in designing alongside studio master Steve Meretzky. I don't want to put any undue pressure on the folks at Hothead, but just about everything in this franchise is kind of a beloved classic. Again, no pressure at all. Just tossing that one out there.

So, is everyone readying their towels accordingly?

Madden NFL Football Games Reviews

People play sports because of a certain competitive spirit imbued within them; a desire to play against the best and persevere. People play sports video games for much the same reason. There is certainly a lazier bent to gaming in favor of the real thing, but the competitive spirit remains. You play Madden because you want to show your friends you have the greatest mastery of Aaron Rogers' throws, Arian Foster's jukes, and Patrick Willis' brutal tackles. You want to go online, or play locally against strangers and friends alike, and reign supreme over them.

Run all you like, generic Lions player. You can't escape the misery of Madden on the 3DS.In Madden NFL Football for the newly-released 3DS system, you cannot do this. This is a multiplayer-bereft game of video game football. The only witness to your theoretical digital gridiron glory will be mindless AI players, who frankly could not give a flip about how awesome that deep pass was, or how badly you smoked them on that killer interception. What awaits you is not the heat of intense competition, but the icy, soulless embrace of computer opponents who bend and react with all the humanity of a game of electric football. How pathetic is this? The iPhone version, which is less than a quarter of the cost of the version found on this new-fangled device, has multiplayer capabilities. Chew on that one, and tell me it isn't a little salty.

Mind you, multiplayer is not the only thing missing from Madden NFL Football. For starters, there is the obvious year marking in the title, which seems to suggest that this is an iteration of Madden that exists outside of time as we perceive it. Considering what an insane regression this is from what players got to know on the DS of old, credence is lent to that theory. The game offers up 11-on-11 and 5-on-5 permutations of football. In the 5-on-5 game, you play to a score of 30, and the incongruous soundtrack plays incessantly over the action. Otherwise, there is little difference beyond fewer player models on the field.

In either event, you can opt for quick matches against the computer, or play in the season mode. That's not a franchise mode, mind you. It's a season mode. You play a season. That's it. Feature wise, it's actually a little like the online franchise mode introduced to the console versions not terribly long ago. Except there are no other people playing besides yourself, and the computer is seemingly incapable of trades, because that's probably hard to program, or something.

That is the gamut of modes to run through. When you tire of playing through single season after single season, perhaps you can create your own metagame out of "how many scoring exploits can I find in this game?" Handheld versions of Madden have never been the shining beacons of quality of the franchise, but over the years, whatever short-straw-drawing developers EA happened to lock in a supply closet for the duration necessary to churn out the latest DS and PSP editions of the game clearly developed some kind of Stockholm Syndrome, and out of sympathy for their captors, began turning in progressively more playable--if not exactly impressive--handheld football games. Some included multiplayer, even.

In six months, when Madden NFL 12 is released, feel free to just set your old Madden cart on fire. It'll be cathartic. While this Madden plays a generally functional game of football in some scenarios--specifically when tuned to the All Pro difficulty, and after half-an-hour or so spent fudging with the few available gameplay sliders--it's effectively broken outside of those specific scenarios. All Madden is, predictably, impossible, cheap, and annoying. The default Pro setting cannot be considered anything but an elaborate, jokey reference to Tecmo Bowl. Every running back capable of moderate speed can regularly punch in huge gains like the great, diagonal Bo Jackson. On kick returns, the touchdowns you don't get are the anomaly. Run forward, then run sideways, then run forward again, and watch as opponents struggle mightily to catch up. I got 14 return touchdowns in a row before I finally found a kick returner slow enough to negate the exploit. He was a linebacker, by the way.

But what of the 3D? Or, you know, the only possible remaining reason to buy this thing? It's OK. The primary functionality of the 3D is to take the UI overlays and make them stand out against the depth of the play field. So scores, game clock, and other display-related bric-a-brac are all up in your face, while the field remains mostly the same. There is a bit of visual depth to the field you wouldn't otherwise get, but its purpose is elusive. The on-field action does at least look reasonably decent, with player models receiving a bump in quality over previous DS iterations. It looks more like the old PSP games than anything else. Still, animations are as janky as ever, especially when two players happen to rub up against one another, and while it's admirable that EA was able to shoehorn the console versions' commentary track onto a 3DS cart, it also seems an entirely superfluous and mildly cruel inclusion, given the giant, gaping holes found elsewhere.

Madden NFL Football on the 3DS is a senseless endeavor. Its sole purpose seems to be to exist as a Madden game on store shelves at a platform launch. It's a crass, vacant husk so lacking in personality or substance that it might as well just be called Football Video Game: IN 3D!!! It's the worst kind of opportunism at $40 a pop. The tragedy is that it will work. People will buy this, because it exists at the right moment. Perhaps EA will release the rest of this game--namely, the fun parts--as part of its next Madden suite. That would be little solace for those who purchased this dreck. They'll still be saddled with this worthless, untradeable lump sitting on their game shelf, like a benign inoperable tumor.
