Titanic Takeover Tuesday: LulzSec's busy day of hacking escapades

Lulz Security, the hacking group apparently motivated by nothing more than their desire to laugh at the mayhem they cause, has had a busy day in an event they called Titanic Takeover Tuesday. Taking a break from their dumps of user data and server break-ins, today saw the group perform a bunch of distributed denial of service attacks against a range of targets.

First up—and still only intermittently available at the time of writing—was gaming magazine The Escapist, with no apparent reason for the attack. LulzSec boasted that taking down the site required just 0.4 percent of its DDoS capacity.

Next in line were the login servers for the game EVE Online. The effect of this attack was to bring down theEVE Online website at the same time, though LulzSec insists that this was not the actual target. In response to the DDoS, CCP Games, makers of EVE, have taken all their systems offline, for fear that they might be hacked. The company has also issued a statement to assure customers that their personal information remains secure.

The third target—and the only one for which the group has offered a rationale beyond "lulz"—is an IT security company named Finfisher. Their site was taken down, briefly, because "apparently they sell monitoring software to the government or some shit like that."

Gamers were once more in the crosshairs with the fourth target; more login servers, this time for Minecraft. Just as with EVE Online, going after the login servers also took out the game's website.

The pattern was repeated for the fifth target; login servers for the game League of Legends were knocked offline, a move which also brought down the game's website.

The result of all this? Lot of enraged gamers complaining about the downtime, and hence, many lulz for Lulz Security. Going after gaming targets hasn't made the group universally popular; posters on 4chan's /b/ forum, who might normally be sympathetic to lulz-motivated shenanigans, attempted to hunt LulzSec down. LulzSecdismissed the "/b/tards" as "damn furries," saying that they were the cream of the /b/ crop from 2005, distancing themselves from the /b/tards of today.

With a new school year just around the corner and businesses getting serious again as summer comes to an end, both students and office workers will soon be back in writing mode. Whether it’s study notes or meeting memos you’ll be scribbling, you’ll benefit from a device that’s smarter than your average pen. The 2GB Echo Smartpen ($99.95) fromLivescribe fits the bill, and with the company’s new Connect software, you can now upload and share your digitized notes and send them to Evernote, Google Docs, Facebook, and other services.
We’ve long been fans of the Echo Smartpen, which records and stores all your notes and doodles and can even capture audio. Paired with Livescribe paper, the Smart Pen becomes an even more powerful tool, with special shortcut symbols to scroll through notes and the ability to sync your notes with recorded audio. The latest version of the pen comes at a more student-friendly price, though it offers just 2GB of storage. However, with the just-released Connect software, there’s no need to keep all your notes on the pen, anyway.

Aside from allowing users to share notes and drawings via Google Docs, e-mail, Facebook, and Google Docs, Connect boasts the new Pencast PDF format for viewing pencasts (interactive versions of your notes complete with audio in sync with the writing). Previously only viewable with Livescribe’s proprietary software, pencasts can now be opened via Acrobat Reader (version 10 or higher). Another welcome feature of the Connect software is the ability to send notes to e-mail, Facebook, and many other web services directly from the Livescribe paper.

Take Notes on Your iPad

While these iPad styluses don’t offer the ability to record and send your notes to the cloud, they make doodling in SketchBook Pro, jotting down ideas in Note Taker HD, and scrolling through web pages smooth and seamless.
3M Smart Pen MJP-3000
Featuring a detachable lid that lets you attach this pen to your tablet or smartphone, the 3M Smart Pen MJP-3000 comes in black, navy blue, pink, and silver. The stylus boasts the smallest tip of all the devices we tested; we found it to be more accurate than the Kensington Virtuoso but a little less precise than the Wacom Bamboo Stylus. While the MJP-3000 offers easy scrolling, we wish the stylus tip was a bit firmer.

Kensington Virtuoso Touch Screen Stylus and Pen
With a smooth touch tip on one end and a ballpoint pen on the other, the Kensington Virtuouso Touch Screen Stylus and Pen ensures you’ll never be without a writing utensil. Though it features a larger tip than some of the other styluses we tested, it still allows you to navigate your tablet and scribble notes with accuracy—provided you write large enough. As a bonus, an ink refill for the ballpoint pen is included.
Wacom Bamboo Stylus
It’s only natural that Wacom, the well-known manufacturer of graphicstablets and pens, would have a contribution to the capacitive stylus market. Its Bamboo Stylus, designed specifically to work with the iPad, features a tip that’s 25 percent narrower than those found on most other popular models, which allows for greater accuracy when doodling or taking notes. We like the stylus’ sleek black-and-silver design, but we found that it offered more resistance and required us to press harder than the other devices we tested. On the plus side, this means fewer mistakes and less accidental input.

Murdoch urges China to open up its film market

Hoping the record-breaking Chinese revenues from "Avatar" can be replicated many times over, Rupert Murdoch urged China on Sunday to further open up its movie market.
On Saturday, Murdoch and his Chinese-born wife, Wendi Deng, walked the red carpet at the Shanghai International Film Festival's opening ceremony alongside Hollywood stars including Susan Sarandon and Matt Dillon. A day later, pageantry gave away to tough talk.
Speaking before a panel discussion on film finance attended by a top Chinese film regulator, the Australian-born media mogul said despite rapid growth, the Chinese cinematic market was still underdeveloped.
Murdoch said the numbers were breathtaking: Chinese box office revenues surged from just $150 million in 2005 to $1.5 billion last year, and a theater-building rush is expected to raise the number of movie screens in China from the current 6,200 to 20,000 in five years. Most of the new screens use 3-D compatible digital projectors.
"The truth is there is no more exciting market in the world than this one," he said.
Murdoch has seen the dividends firsthand. The 2009 3-D sci-fi epic "Avatar" - released by Fox, a unit of Murdoch's News Corp. - brought in a whopping $204 million in China, second only to the movie's American box office take.
However, the News Corp. chairman went on to say that "the promise" of China's investment in screen infrastructure "has not been fully realized because market access remains so restricted."
China maintains import restrictions that effectively limit the country to 20 foreign blockbusters a year. Film imports are still controlled by the state-owned China Film Group - despite a December 2009 ruling from the World Trade Organization urging Beijing to allow foreign studios to distribute their own movies in the country.
"This presents significant challenges," Murdoch said, adding that limited access to foreign content encourages piracy.
"In the long run, it will only limit the opportunity for China to grow its cinema market. As China's theatrical market tries to continue to grow, it is critical to fill the pipeline with more local films as well as more films imported from other countries," he said.
Veteran Hollywood producer Mike Medavoy agreed.
"We, the American market and American filmmakers and the rest of the world need the Chinese market to open up," he said. Major productions "cost a lot of money and therefore you need outside revenues, and revenues will come out of China."
The Chinese regulator attending Sunday's session, Zhang Pimin, didn't immediately respond to Murdoch's speech. In his own speech, Zhang, vice minister of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, didn't address market access but said the Chinese government wants to encourage Chinese filmmakers to raise funds from capital markets. Chinese studios have only recently began to go public, with Huayi Brothers Media Co. listing on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and Bona Film Group listing on Nasdaq.
Murdoch's wife, however, was more diplomatic. Producer Wendi Deng is getting ready to release the drama "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" in China on June 24. Chinese-American director Wayne Wang's adaptation of the Lisa See novel by the same name will be distributed in North America by News Corp.'s Fox Searchlight Pictures - but the production was mainly funded by Chinese investors.
Asked by the host about the chllenges of shooting in China, Deng jokingly said the list was too long and instead thanked her investors: Huayi Brothers, Shanghai Film Group and IDG Capital Partners. "I was lucky that when I really liked this project, I had a worldly team and they were willing to invest," Deng said in her native language, andarin.
Asked by an audience member about the benefits of shooting in China, Deng quickly praised China's lower costs, which enabled "Snow Flower" filmmakers to build an epic set in the Hengdian studios in eastern China.

Surviving the Modern Day Breakup

We live in modern times. Before, you could avoid seeing or thinking about post-relationship fallout for maybe weeks. Nowadays, it’s not so easy to run away. All that's needed is a Facebook blast stating that ‘you are no longer in a relationship’ and all your friends will be on you in a heartbeat.

Here are some tips to surviving the modern day break-up.
1. Go ninja

What we mean by this is by going off the radar with your relationship status. Before you do the deed of unlisting your ex-significant other, set your relationship status privacy setting to “Only Me”. Only then should you change your status.

After that, wait a day or two and un-private your settings with your new relationship status. That way, you would have done the painful without it appearing on everyone’s news feed.

This is very handy in dodging those near-guaranteed questions of “Are you ok?” and “What happened?”. Let’s face it, no one wants to answer those questions fresh out of a break up.
2. Think Long-term – Untag those photos

This may be a painful move straight out of a break-up. But sooner or later, you will need to bite that bullet and untag all the couple pictures of both of you.

It is difficult and tedious, if you two were a snap-happy couple. However, it has very practical benefits.

Imagine your next flame sifting through all the pictures of you two laughing and smiling with comments like “You guys are so good together!” plastered all over. Now imagine his/her jealous face. Not a pretty sight, huh?

No one wants to be reminded that you were once in love with another person. Try to erase you and your ex’s Facebook history as much as possible before getting back out there.
3. Should I Unfriend My Ex?

This is a tough call and one that is very personal. But if you’re like any normal, hurting human being, it won’t bode well to continue receiving updates about your ex. In fact, it may set back any healing your heart would have been doing.

If you feel that unfriending the ex may be too harsh a step, we recommend you hide updates from your ex from your news feed. This feature allows you to selectively block updates from certain individuals so you’ll never need to see them.

As what Neil Sedaka sings: “Breaking up is hard to do”. Getting over it is even worst. But with a few clicks of your Facebook settings, you’ll be able to give yourself space to heal and eventually, let go.

Phase: The wounds of change

Waves of change: Maria Bernadeth (left) and Davit (right) perform in the dance titled Padusi, choreographed by Jefri Andi Usman. Photo courtesy of Bodi CH

Silence swept through a stage dotted with dead trees, until monotonous low-key sounds could be discerned.

Some movements accompanied the continuous sounds, bathed in illumination on the right-hand corner at the back of the stage.

The movements and sounds were a reminder of oil refining machines endlessly draining our earth’s resources. A body later appeared, crawling slowly like a caterpillar coming out of a “time machine”, looking wobbly. Another body also emerged. They were seemingly part of the dead vegetation around.

Other monotonous sounds followed, mimicking the drone of chainsaws in forests along with sawmills. The silence came to an end. The bodies were wriggling, trying to rise, only to fall headlong to the ground. The earth was wounded. The sounds of woodcutting machines never ceased, humming all the time and creating inconceivable agony.

This portrayal of a wounded and aging earth of life caused by neglect from the modern men was featured in Tanah Merah (Red Soil), the first part of Tabusai Dance co.’s PHASE presented by choreographer Jefri Andi Usman, 39, at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (GKJ) this month.

Of Minang (West Sumatra) origin, Jefri has toured various countries and collaborated with world choreographers like Henrietta Horn, Juan Cruz (Germany, Yukio Waguri, Kota Yamazaki (Japan) and Peter Chin (Canada).

Change has given rise to countless wounds. This situation was portrayed with a murky sense of poetry.

The entire imagination put across on stage stemmed from human tragedy.

Normal life is something indistinct, only to be longed for, which was articulated by the sounds of sampelong and puput labu (traditional Minang wind instruments) and digirudu (aboriginal instrument), wailing vaguely, as if coming from a far-off cave.

Jefri, with his awareness and experience, has freed himself from the temptation or desire of presenting neatly composed and beautifully designed works for spectators to feast their eyes on, which would ruin the artistic quality of his choreography.

Padusi (Minang for women), was the second part of the PHASE show. The stage was cleared of the dead trees. The entire space was left open to depict the existence of women under the matrilineal system currently battered by the waves of changing times, which Jefri has been obsessed with.
Bodi CH: Photo courtesy of Bodi CH

In Minang society, women as the pillars of family life or clans and whose position is guarded by a social system based on religious culture, today have to face the inevitable waves of transformation.

Padusi was not staged in a realistic manner. Songs, percussions and wind instruments offered richer artistic energy to convey the reality of change taking place at present. Today’s Minang women freely go beyond the confines of gender, causing them to be alienated from traditional life.

Removed from traditional frames of the past, they appear to be modern, yet without having created a new identity for themselves. They may be enjoying their freedom, but they have lost their identity in the course of the change, which is still not well understood.

They are more concerned with deriving pleasure from freedom rather than with the honor and moral superiority of padusi as implied by their tradition and culture.

The ancestral songs belted out by golden-voice singer Piterman, a touring vocalist and graduate from the Indonesian Art College of Padangpanjang, sounded like mantras. He produced humming, groaning and even howling tones for the sake of recreating the lost air of tranquility of bygone times, now overwhelmed by the waste of change.

Along with Risdul and Desmal Hendri, also alumni of the same college, he built varying moods by presenting several acts without music while maintaining the musical atmosphere of the stage.

The jerky body language of Maria Bernadeth and Davit with padusi being carried on male shoulders was the most down-to-earth expression of the wild transformation as perceived by Jefri.

With Jefri’s artistic and lighting direction that remained open to various possibilities, the stage was like two paintings of PHASE that still left unfilled spaces on the canvases. The trees also assumed a minimal function. More extensive and profound exploration is needed for high quality artistic achievements.

Jefri was capable of communicating it all as proven in his previous work, Akan Jadi Malam (It’s going to be night). Davit and Maria as dancers in Padusi were not adequately challenged to demonstrate their best quality as they had done in Akan Jadi Malam, though.

Finally, with the potential they all have developed so far, the future of Tabusai Dance co. will depend highly on their management competence.

Top 10 Reasons To Keep Kids Off The Screen

There’s a commercial running for a little while now, a promotion for a new t.v. show that’s about to air. About aliens violently invading our planet, whereupon the world becomes a dystopia of overturned cars and utter panic. In it, after showing scenes of deranged-looking aliens (CGI, no less) ripping humans apart and plasma cannons blowing through architecture like micro-tsunamis, a little boy, not even looking up from his Game Boy, simply, effortlessly, and casually says to his dad, “I just want everything to go back to normal.” Not because his friends and family are one by one being targeted by homicidal space-beings (which exist) or that he’s homeless and been forced into a game of survival, he offers the emotional content as if he just said “I don’t want to eat a lollipop right now.” Doesn’t that piss you off?

There’s a reason why midgets filled Teletubby costumes or why cartoons always cast a female voice actor to play any boy character. Because a real kid would screw that up, too. Kids don’t belong in the entertainment industry for myriad reasons, many having to do with the instant diminishing of enjoyment that comes with having one on a set, having to be responsible for one. Maybe it’s just a pet peeve, but these terrible child actors speak for themselves (when they really shouldn’t). Here is a list of the top ten reasons why the kids should stay the hell out of the picture:

(Warning: if you love children and every single thing they do, read no further. If you’re a mom that insists on repeatedly dragging your kid to a talent agency because you’re proud of your only true creation, stop. You’re a terrible person.)

10
Legalities

Reason: They are legal hell.

Simply put, a working child under the age of 18 must adhere to labor laws, laws which require constant breaks and limited working hours in a day. Such restrictions are not conducive to a film schedule, which often consists of full 12-hour days. Then there’s the concern of subject matter, say involving sex scenes, that must adhere to age-oriented decency law. Jodie Foster, for instance, was about 13 when she played a hooker in Taxi Driver. Of course, hookers have sex, perform certain explicit duties, duties no thirteen-year-old is inherently qualified for (her much older cousin actually filled in during the suggestive scenes). Even still, this child actor must be aware of what’s going on, given the informative nature of a script, and, as such, out goes innocence. Nowadays, such sexual awareness is constantly finding its way to younger and younger ages, to where innocence hardly has much of a chance to take a first breath out the womb. At any rate, a kid can only slow down adult-oriented momentum, to where that kid shouldn’t be present at all.

9
Nepotism

Reason: They are often cast through industry nepotism.

Jayden Smith, son of the Fresh Prince, is a movie star in his father’s rite. Hell, even Will’s 9-year-old daughter has a paid-for career making terrible pop music (like father, like daughter). Even funnier, SHE looks JUST LIKE HIM. It’s true what they say, the business is ALL about connections, but rarely do those connections make for a direct funnel of talent (quite the opposite in fact). Did we need to have a karate kid remake? About as much as another actor’s kid needed to provide a supplementary income in Summer blockbuster royalties.

8
Annoying

Reason: They are always the least interesting/most annoying character in a movie made for adults.

For one, an adult in the film industry just can’t seem to write a part for a child with any sense of believability, discounting John Hughes (if you call a teen a child, and you should). The most terrible example in recent years is the part of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s chubby little sister in (500) Days of Summer. Everything about the movie is swallowable, except for her character’s posture: she continuously talks down to him as she feeds him advice and life wisdom, as if she’s seen everything but a Hello Kitty backpack and the Jonas Brothers 3D Concert. And it’s obvious that kind of condescension and general knowledgeability is ill-fitting for a girl her age, because the little girl who plays her can’t give a credible performance. More despicable yet, is how this girl has a stable film career, continuing on in a vein of ill-fittedness (as ill-fitted as her transition out of prepubescence) from role to role in movies like Kickass and Let Me In. Damn it, cast her out already, or at least in something more fitting, (perhaps a poncho?) as an extra.

7
Creeps

Reason: Creeps make online countdowns.

It is inevitable that a female child star appearing on screen (e.g. the Olsens) is going to one day turn eighteen, and leave it to online creeps and pedophiles in training to await the day their fantasies can no longer be deemed illicit (doesn’t make them anymore okay for the middle-aged bachelors who make an unofficial hobby of flipping through high school year books…from recent years.) It doesn’t help that the oft-sheltered and impressionable screen stars are made to believe that with teenage comes public sexuality (as demonstrated by a determined Miley Cyrus, fighting her way to make the Disney Channel a platform for misbehavior, her co-star washed-up musician-dad reaping the benefits all the while).

6
Seedy

Reason: They often fade into a seedy oblivion.

If a child star doesn’t get washed-up and vanish swiftly and quietly, after causing an unrepeatable and very short-lived sensation (e.g. Gary Coleman, Anthony Michael Hall, etc.), he usually spirals violently downhill and makes a sort of alternative career out of being a tabloid tragedy (e.g. anyone from the eighties named Corey), pursuing drugs, drunken assault charges, and a lifestyle of debauchery. Followed by the cold epiphany of being old hat, old news, old.

5
Corrupt

Reason: It’s corrupt.

It’s a common dream for a kid to say he wants to be a movie star when he grows up, but to force him into the lifestyle, with everything that comes with it, before he even gets the chance to grow up, or even enjoy the innocence of childhood, is just messed up. No kid has the wherewithal to badger agencies into finding “work” in Hollywood, as if a kid is looking to work when he needs not pay for anything himself; no, it is parents looking to exploit their children, whom they find adorable as all hell and insist others must too, so they can pay the bills without having to actually do hard work themselves. Yes, they “deserve” to get a criminal cut of that child’s earnings to “reimburse” the expended effort being professionally overbearing. Remember when Maculay Culkin’s parents robbed his future savings blind because he was in no legal position to argue? Yeah, that’s what happens when you trust your parents to do what’s in YOUR best interest.

4
Ego

Reason: They develop egos at an age when the super-ego should be kicking in.

Michael Jackson is a prime example of why a child needs a normal childhood (though in his case his father was the one pushing him into the spotlight). The real world just doesn’t seem to exist in that kind of bubble-oriented environment. As such, real world implications don’t matter, only the implications of fame, success and the nature of a self-satisfied business.

3
Tragedy

Reason: Tragic decline.

Dakota Fanning. She’s the modern-day equivalent of Maculay Culkin. The latter starred in movies both mature and innocent in subject matter, at an age of innocence (The Good Son and Home Alone, respectively). He was a “movie star” who hadn’t even reached puberty yet, but was some kind of public darling. Likewise, Fanning has appeared in Doctor Seuss movies as well as one involving a dad with a sadistic split personality, and recently as a slutty rock star. It’s the tragic decline of innocence that comes with a preteen actor/actress growing up in the clutches of an exploitative industry, the kind that rewards shock value with an ongoing career, in lieu of a swift dissolution into obscurity (The Brady kids did it the right way, letting Alice sweep their futures in show business under the carpet.). Someone needs to stop selling movies to delusional parents who watch child stars grow up on screen as if they were raising them themselves. Who else tracks a career beginning in the womb?

2
Undeserved

Reason: They don’t deserve it.

Envy gives birth to resentment, sure, but how many talented kids, that might have actually been raised in a militant household that placed emphasis on craft-honing, are over-looked in pivotal casting calls for the cutest one in the bunch? There are some kids that grow up in t.v.-free, Puritanical households, who read books and gain wisdom while most kids are beating their heads into pulp with video games and the stimulation orgy that is Cartoon Network’s idea of child entertainment. For instance, that British kid from the Willy Wonka remake, the one that seems a few decades too mature for his timid frame. Mostly though, it’s just flat out obnoxious for any working artist seeing some little kid get swept into fame and fortune with no teeth being cut in the process (at least none that the tooth fairy won’t compensate).

1
Acting

Reason: They can’t act.

And there’s a reason for it: no kid has accrued the required life experience necessary to breathe life into a dynamic character, especially when characters aren’t (or shouldn’t, anyway) two-dimensional. It might make sense that a child can supply a child’s experiences to the role of a child, but even that requires a grasp on transference, and the actualization that you need to be another person through an excerpt of identity-informing lines. But more than words, a kid needs to know how to recall/supply emotions to appropriate occasions, beyond having some grip squirt tear drops in their eyes during all the “sad” scenes. In the case of a character taking on the self-assuredness and maturity of someone much older, the kid has to be able to supply a sense of origin, the disposition through which those traits can become evident. Otherwise, you just have another terrible kid actor making a joke of a serious scene and destroying the fourth wall out of clumsiness and poor casting. “I just want everything to go back to normal.”

King Kong Optical Illusion

Ellen (erwtj3 from previous post) pointed me to another funny optical illusion. I definitely agree with her evaluation how this probably isn’t the best illusion around, and even though quite obvious, it’s still one in a million shot.

What it depicts is a gigantic baboon bearing down on the packed car, angrily pounding his clenched furry fist on the roof. Daily Mail characterized it as a scene from a spin-off version of King Kong.

The photo was taken at Knowsley Safari Park, in Merseyside, and the baboon was perched on the windscreen of photographer Chez Owen’s car with its arm out. What you already guessed, split-second timing and the angle of the shot make it seem many times bigger than it is… still funny though!
